UK hands over new short-range air defense systems to Ukraine

Yesterday it became known about the transfer to Ukraine of new air defense systems from the UK: these are improvised launchers of short-range air-to-air missiles AIM-132 ASRAAM.

The photographs provided show that the two-shot launcher is mounted on a three-axle SupaCat off-road vehicle. The same car is used to transport spare missiles, probably in the amount of four pieces. Instead of a radar, an electro-optical head is installed on the machine, placed on a telescopic pole behind the cab. In this configuration, the air defense system can effectively counter threats from helicopters and cruise missiles. However, to defeat air targets, an external source of target designation will be required.

It is worth noting that the idea of using air-to-air missiles in air defense systems is far from new, but the effectiveness of such missiles is noticeably less than that of those specially designed to destroy air targets from the ground.

Considering that the Geranium kamikaze drones are a key problem for Kyiv, the British complexes are completely ineffective.
